August 12, 2024 Everything was better in the past
The photo above is of a clock radio that I recently came across in a hotel room. The device was bolted to the headboard of the bed.
My first reaction “Okay, thats's an old one” quickly gave way to curiosity about whether the device would still work. Of course it did. Plug it in, turn on the volume, search for a frequency and voila, music!
I have no idea how old the device is, but I estimate it to be at least 25 years old. I wasn't even surprised that the display turned on and sound came out.
While companies now proudly report that they are sustainable and circular, this used to be the norm. Devices were made to last as long as possible. Nowadays, the main intention is that devices are replaced within the foreseeable future because turnover has to be made.
Was everything really better in the past?
Probably not, but it might have been less complicated. The radio in the photo has 11 buttons, an average smartphone already has more functions on the first screen. Perhaps such a device should no longer be called a smartphone. We call less and less and send messages more and more. Maybe smart-typewriter is a better name, but that's besides the point ;-)
I like the simplicity of things like the clock radio, where without documentation it is immediately clear which button is for what.
That's why I'm so proud of TwelveBricks. I've seen many website builders and CMSs with an overabundance of well-intentioned buttons and features that make things more difficult and confusing rather than easier for users and editors.
TwelveBricks is chock full of the latest techniques and standards, but at the same time it has the simplicity of use so that everyone can get started right away and always get the best results very quickly.
