June 3, 2024 Drupal 7 to 12
Drupal is an open source Content Management System and, like all software, has versions. These are supported by the community for a certain time. Over time, they no longer receive security updates and thus a version is then "End of Life".
Drupal version 7 will no longer be supported from 5 January 2025. This means that if your website is still using version 7 after this date, it is potentially no longer secure.
What are the options?
Keeping an insecure website online is basically not an option. If a security hole is found, malicious people can change your site, damaging your brand. So it is important to switch to another solution. But what options do you have and what are the consequences?
Option 1 : Migrate to a newer version.
What probably first comes to mind is upgrading to a newer version of Drupal, the most recent version being Drupal 10. A wise choice, but one with serious consequences. Because Drupal 10 is very different from version 7, it actually means that your website has to be completely rebuilt.
Reinstall and reconfigure the CMS, create a new template, redo customisation and migrate the content. You are then quickly investing a lot of money and only getting what you have now. So an investment in the past, not an investment in the future.
Option 2 : Migrate to Backdrop
Backdrop is a continuation of the Drupal 7 platform and so your site will be up to date again. Is this the best choice?
It depends. Backdrop is open source, but there are not very many developers active in the community. The code builds on Drupal 7 and that technology is now as much as 14 years old. While there are marginal migration costs, it is still a hefty one-off investment, in addition to recurring costs for security updates and hosting.
Option 3 : Make use of TwelveBricks
Aaaah, that's why the title of this page is "Drupal 7 to 12". Indeed!
TwelveBricks is a SaaS. That means that for a fixed, low monthly fee, you are always assured of an up-to-date website, including hosting costs.
Have you ever consciously chosen Drupal because it is so robust and don't want to move away from it? No problem, Drupal is also the foundation of TwelveBricks. So you keep the CMS you had only with a usability you haven't experienced before....
